The Tom Uren Trail honours the life of a man committed to working in the service of the human family. The Trail is a circuit commencing at Thornton Park near Balmain East Ferry Walk.

The walk takes 2 hours and invites you come to come and discover the Balmain of Tom Uren, the place where he was born and returned to enjoy the final years of his life.

When: Saturday 28 May, 2016 11am – Official launch of the Tom Uren Trail. 2pm – BBQ, and the Best on Trail Hat Awards.

Where: lloura Reserve, East Balmain.

Tom passed on Australia Day in 2015, and this trail continues his legacy to the local and the wider community.

The Tom Uren Trail honours the life of a man committed to working in the service of the human family.

By walking his trail we invite you to come to know this man in his Balmain, the place where he was born and returned to enjoy the final years of his life.

His was a full life. He worked hard and earnestly, loved large, and learnt from observation and discussion wherever he went. He practised the art of lifelong learning, always keeping an ear to the ground, combining his intuition and intelligence to work for what he believed throughout his long political life. He was a staunch civil libertarian with a strong sense of social justice.

The Trail: The trail is 2.3km long, has some steep inclines, and will take 2.5 hours at a relaxed pace.

Balmain working class hero and Labor legend Tom Uren dies a national icon on Australia Day. This Political Giant who is locally and nationally celebrated will remain as an important part of our Australian History. The different stages of Tom’s almost 94 years covered so much of the Australian experience – soldier, heavyweight boxer, prisoner of war, parliamentarian, anti-war activist, Minister, environmentalist, and humanitarian of the highest order.
