History Week…… Are You in the Picture?

EXHIBITION OPENING SEPTEMBER 11th 6:30PM

@ Leichhardt Library – Book now 9367 9266Tony Dixon f

The Tony Dixon Legacy Research Group would like to invite you to an exhibition of Tony’s works, all

his drawn portraits, with some cartoons, banners and screen-prints, at the Leichhardt Library. The

exhibition is show-casing his works on behalf of History Week. How about that!

As you may remember Leichhardt Council gave us a grant to compile Tony’s complete works digitally

and archive them for their protection. This year the theme for History Week is “Picture This” and we

were asked if we would exhibit Tony’s portraits and artwork. Tony drew about 200 portraits and

because nearly one third are unknown to us we have titled the exhibition “Are you in the Picture?”.

We are hoping to connect with members of the Leichhardt community as they come to the

exhibition to see if they are in the picture!

The exhibition is on from 9 September to 30 October at Leichhardt Library, 23 Norton Street,

Italian Forum, Piazza Level, Leichhardt. This is a free event.

The exhibition Opening will be held on Wednesday 11 September at 6.30pm. It will be important

to RSVP for catering purposes – ph: 9367 9266 or email: localhistory@lmc.nsw.gov.au. The library

is expecting a large attendance due to it being History Week.

Parking is under the Italian Forum, entering from Norton Street.

(2hr free parking with ticket validated at the library.)

We hope you will be able to come along!

Regards

Bev, Pina, Margaret, Jo, Jim and Fr Adrian.

Rozelle

Many people often ask about the The origin of the name for ROZELLE

Back in the 1890s when Balmain West was a quickly growing suburb, the local Post Office was Rosellabird2often confused with Balmain Post Office. When the Post Master general decided to build a new post office at the corner of Darling Street and Weston Road (now Victoria Road) he was adamant that the name must be changed to end the confusion.

Some residents did not take kindly to the idea and protested strongly. Some wanted it to be called Garry Owen but many wanted the name left as Balmain West. RozellePO

By 1907, however the post office AND the suburb were known as Rozelle – shopkeepers, local people and newspapers all used the name Rozelle. The name of the school was changed from Darling Road Superior Public School to Rozelle Superior Public School.

No one knows for certain where the name Rozelle comes from. The area no doubt, took its name from Rozelle Bay (sometimes called Rozella Bay on old maps) which had been used since the 1840s. Whether the Bay was named after the Rosella parrot or the Rosella plant, an hibiscus, has not yet been determined.

Either the bird or the flower is a colourful derivation for the name of the suburb ROZELLE.

Evening Author Talk with MARK TEDESCHI QC @ Balmain Library

An event not to be missed this book had to be written!

The curious story of Eugene Falleni, a crossdressing murderer has ties to Balmain. Few know that in February 1913, under the alias of ‘Harry Crawford’, Falleni married widow Annie Birkett at the Methodist Parsonage, Balmain South (125 Darling Street Balmain which was demolished in 1948.)

In the same year they ran a confectionary shop in Balmain at 231 Darling Street.

More information:

In Eugenia, barrister and Crown Prosecutor Mark Tedeschi QC explores the story of one of the most extraordinary criminal trials in Australia’s legal history. Capturing what life was really like in Eugenia’s times.

Drawing from 35 years experience prosecuting and defending in some of Australia’s most significant trials, Tedeschi examines an over-exuberant police investigation, a flawed Crown case, an erudite judge, a determined prosecutor, an overwhelmed defender, the newspapers gone feral, and the public clamouring for blood.

Tedeschi believes this dangerous mix led to one of Australia’s worst carriages of justice and, in the end, a terrible tragedy.

Heritage Festival 2013 – Community Milestones.

The Heritage Festival 2013 – Community Milestones has been a huge success with over 400 people attending events in Annandale, Balmain and Leichhardt. Opening on the 18th April FILEF ( Federation of Migrant Workers and families ) launched their exhibition with 150 attendees. Speeches from Franca Arena, Frank Pennuci, and Mayor Darcy Byrne were well received and the 40th Anniversary celebrations combined with the retrospective exhibition gave historians, students and the wider community much to learn, reflect and embrace around the milestones of this socially and politically active community group. FILEF welcomes all who are interested in Italian language, culture and social issues. Filef formed in 1972 Its key objective is to promote an Australia that recognizes the value of multicultural origins and cultures of all Australians. The exhibition displays demonstration marches in 1970s and 1980s for Women’s rights, workers rights, Migrant and Indigenous rights. Some of their achievements include successfully launching the Italian Language being integrated into the Public School system across Australia. Their current program is aimed at primary school children (K-Yr 6) Italian-Australians or with a basic understanding of Italian, to activate and develop their language skills in Italian.  The exhibition also contained photographs publications, film and plays. The great news is that Leichhardt Library will be inheriting all of the FILEF material to be made available to future generations. This collection will be held in the Balmain Library archives and can be viewed by appointment. 150 historic  images will also be made available online through the Library Online catalogue.
